Dangote Vs Farouk (Jungle's Take)
The fight ongoing between these two is a big question mark. Is Dangote really looking out for the welfare of the Nigerians, or is there something deeper about it? Is Farouk really living beyond his means for a "Public servant"? It will be difficult for us to tell who is wrong and who is right in this fight because I don't think we have all the facts just yet.
For starters, we know that Nigeria had allegedly spent about 20 bilion dollars to revive it's refineries which ended up as an absolute failure. This resulted in us continuing our import of refined products and petro-chemicals. For a country that is blessed with crude oil, I think we are cursed if we live in such manner. Do recall that before 29th May 2023, fuel subsidy had been removed and Nigerians' access to cheaper fuel had been terminated. This drastically blew fuel prices to the roof thereby causing a terrible inflation. Dangote came with his idea of a refinery, before this subsidy was even removed and by the time the subsidy had left, he stepped in to be a bridge between Nigerian and a more slightly affordable fuel access. In his pursuit of this quest, we soon found out that the necessary bodies that were meant to aid in the treatment of this expensive fuel blow, were frustrating his efforts. It took the President's intervention before Dangote could begin operations. Overtime there was a slight flunctuation in fuel prices even though most times it dropped more than it rose.
Now, we can't ignore the fact that there has been a few improvements in fuel prices overtime. Infact, Dangote wants to take the fuel prices lower now. And that is what has brought about his current friction with Ahmed Farouk, The former Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). without knowing much about the fight, we know so far that Dangte alegedly accused Farouk of spending about 5 million dollars (approximately 7 billion naira) for the educaion of his children. Dangote even went as far as publishing this information on a newspaper. He added the names of Mr. Farouk's children to the publication. I guess whatever is happening between those two must be deep for things to get to this extent.
Here are a bit of the reasons for their so called conflicts at least from what we know so far:
1. Allegations of Economic Sabotage
Import Licensing: Dangote accused Ahmed and the NMDPRA of "economic sabotage" by continuing to issue import licenses for petroleum products to international traders, which he claimed was a deliberate attempt to undermine the domestic refining capacity of the Dangote Refinery.
Monopoly Claims: Conversely, the NMDPRA had previously suggested that the Dangote Refinery was attempting to create a monopoly and that its output was insufficient to meet Nigeria's daily national demand. But from what we can tell, we heard some nations are even seeking to purchase fuel from him. This is a rather large mystery yet to unfold I believe.
2. Personal Corruption Charges
Unexplained Wealth: In December 2025, Dangote publicly questioned Ahmed’s personal finances, alleging he was "living beyond his means".
Swiss Education Costs: Dangote claimed Ahmed spent approximately $5 million over six years on secondary education for four children in Switzerland, and an additional $2 million on tertiary education, including fees for a Harvard MBA.
ICPC Petition: Dangote filed a formal petition with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), demanding an investigation into Ahmed for alleged embezzlement and breach of conduct for public officers.
3. Outcome and Resignation
Following the escalation of these public disputes and the formal petition, Farouk Ahmed resigned from his position as CEO of the NMDPRA on December 17, 2025.
Seeing all these drama, what do you think would be the end product of this strife? Some people claim that Dangote is looking to monopolize fuel production in Nigeria so he can make more money. Could there be a touch of truth there? Remember, Dangote is business man. This could be one his plots or strategic plans towards making more for himself. Perhaps getting Farouk out of his way is a step closer to his alleged monopoly plight.
But then again, why did Farouk resign? Could it be that he is guilty as charged? Has the investigations which they claim would be carried have something sinister that could be revealed? If you look closely at this current situation, it just might be a power fight. They both maybe don't want to fold to each other's demands so one person is looking to hit where it will hurt the other the most.
With these few points of view, what do you think is really happening? Will there eventually be a middle ground that both parties will agree on? Let's continue to observe as time passes.
