Before You Set New Goals, Sit With the Old You

There’s a rush that comes with the approach of a new year — new goals, new plans, new declarations. It’s tempting to sprint into 2026 eager to become a better version of yourself. But before you do, there’s a quieter, braver act that matters more than momentum: sitting with the version of you that survived 2025. Not to criticize or judge them. Not to ridicule or rewrite their story. But to pay attention. Because real growth doesn’t begin with running away from who you were — it begins with understanding them.

Reflection Without Guilt
We’ve been taught to look back only to criticize. We have been told that we need to replay our mistakes and ask, “Why didn’t I do better?”
But reflection isn’t punishment. It’s clarity. You are not weak for what didn’t work.
You were learning — sometimes slowly, sometimes painfully — but learning no matter how you look at it.
So take a breath.
You're not on trial for anything. This just an honest conversation with yourself.
What Drained You?
This part is not pleasant, but necessary.
What took more from you than it gave back?
Was it constantly trying to show everyone you could do it on your own?
Saying yes when your entire being was screaming no?
Staying in spaces where you had to reduce who you are just to belong?
Some exhaustion isn’t from hard work — it’s from discord
You don’t need to carry everything into 2026.
Some things were lessons, not luggages
What Worked This Year?
Pause here.
Don't look for what seemed impressive online.
Do not even think about looking at what got people clapping
What actually worked?
Maybe you didn’t achieve everything, but you showed up more than you did last year.
Maybe you learned how to let your voice be heard.
Maybe you survived a season you once prayed would never come.
Small wins count. Quiet growth counts.
The days you didn’t give in to discouragement count.
If something worked once, it can work again — better this time.

What Version of You Are You Tired of Being?
This question requires honesty.
Are you tired of the version of you that procrastinates until panic becomes the motivation?
The one that keeps waiting for confidence before taking the first step?
The one that knows better but doesn’t always do better?
This isn’t self-hate.
It’s self-awareness.
And awareness is powerful — because you can’t change what you refuse to name.
The version of you that got you here may not be the one that can take you forward.
And that’s okay.

Thank You & Goodbye
Before the year ends, write a letter.
Not to your goals.
Not to the future.
To 2025.
Thank it for what it taught you — even the hard lessons.
Thank yourself for staying, trying, surviving.
And then say goodbye.
Goodbye to patterns that no longer serve you.
Goodbye to excuses that kept you stuck.
Goodbye to the belief that you’re behind or not enough.
You’re not starting 2026 empty-handed.
You’re entering with experience, wisdom, and a clearer sense of self.

Before you set new goals, honour the old you.
They did the best they could with what they knew at the time.
Now you know better.
And you’re allowed to do better — gently, intentionally, and without guilt.
